There are no significant national holidays in the month of August. (January has Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. February has Ground Hog Day and President's Day. March has St. Patrick's Day and sometimes Easter. April has April Fool's Day and Easter. May has Memorial Day and Mother's Day. June has Flag Day and Father's Day. July has Independence Day. September has Labor Day. October has Columbus Day and Halloween. November has Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving. December has Christmas and New Year's Eve.) But, August has no known holidays. Basque is the lineal language of the Basque people from the Basque Country, a region that spans an area in northeastern Spain and southwestern France. It is spoken by little over 25% of Basques in all territories. Welsh is one of the original Celtic languages and spoken mainly in the country of Wales, which is part of the United Kingdom. Only about 20% of the population speak the Welsh language.

The Lazy Men of Summer

First of all, let me start by saying... “sometimes I have nothing better to do with my time.” My story goes back a couple years. Two years ago while I was driving down the road I noticed an elderly woman mowing her yard. I didn't think much of it at the time. But I really felt sorry for the lady, because she looked exhausted and she was old. Over the past couple years, for some odd reason I've seen more women mowing yards than men. This year though, I decided to keep count. I told you I have nothing better to do with my time. Actually, my wife and I drive our kids around to a lot of activities during the summer, and I have to pass the time somehow. That's when it hit me! Men do mow lawns, but with riding lawn mowers. I wanted to post something about our Great Country for the 4th. So, I thought... “what about our forefathers who signed the Declaration of Independence” on July 4, 1776. Do you know all the men who signed this important document? I do know that this document, announced that the thirteen American colonies were independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. I also know that the Declaration of Independence was written primarily by Thomas Jefferson. But who signed the Declaration of Independence? Here is the list of the those 56 men.

Daisy! Not just a summer time flower.

I was in my garden clearing out the weeds and noticed how my daisies keep coming back year after year without any effort from me. I think daisies are the most cheerful flower, and nothing screams summer like a bunch of fresh picked Daisies. Baby Names for the Summer Time Heat

Ah, Summer, It's finally here! Heat, humidity and the late afternoon pop-up shower that always interferes with the kids activities. You guessed it. I'm not a big fan of summer, Autumn is more my thing, but I have to admit that after the brutal winter that the northeast had, it's definitely welcome. There are a few things that I like, mostly the smell of suntan lotion. Every time I get a whiff of it, I am automatically thinking ocean, sand, and waves. My family is of Irish decent, so we are fair completed, red hair and freckles. I don't get a tan, I just burn, BAD!!! Definitely no beach vacations for this family.

Wes Moore appeared in his hometown newspaper, The Baltimore Sun, 10 years ago because of his impressive academic achievements. Around the same time, he noticed a story in the paper about a jewelry store robbery in which a police officer and a father of five was killed.

He learned one of the convicted killers shared his name.

While Wes Moore the Rhodes Scholar would become a combat veteran in Afghanistan and a White House fellow, Wes Moore the convicted felon was sentenced to life in prison. Their correspondence through letters and prison visits led to the release of the book "The Other Wes Moore" this spring.

"The name was the first thing that drove me," said Moore, 31, on what inspired him to befriend the inmate.

Other people may have wondered who also lays claim to their name. Google a relatively common name such as "Steve Jones," and a biologist, musician and golfer appear. And Steve is not even among the Top 10 boys' names of the last century.

Portmanteau (Word Blending) Names

If you wanted to blend two words together, the result would be Portmanteau (port'măntō). A word coined by Lewis Carroll in 1882. Portmanteau is the process of combining two different words together with completely different meanings to form a new word with a new meaning. Portmanteau Baby Names are two names combined together to form another name. There are many names that people create that may be included in the Portmanteau repertoire. Chrisanna is a combination of Chris and Anna. Chris means “Follower of Christ or anointed” and Anna means “Grace”. Now, you could take Anna and combine it with Bella, which means “Beautiful”. Annabella is your result, and it means “Beautiful grace”. Do you get the pattern. Let's take another twist. Anna combined with Maria, which means “Bitter” gives you the result Annamaria. Guess what Annamaria means? That's right... “Bitter Grace”. We can just go on, and on, and on. Let's take Maria and combine it with Rose “Flower”.
